Who We Are

San Joaquin Critical Incident Support Team

The San Joaquin Critical Incident Support Team or “SJACIST” is a program for San Joaquin County consisting of volunteer chaplains and peer support personnel who work with victims of tragedy, crime, disasters and similar unfortunate events.

Meet Our Volunteer Chaplains & Support Team

Michael Kirkle

Michael Kirkle

Mike served 39 years in the fire service, holding leadership roles across San Joaquin County. Since 1993, he has been dedicated to Critical Incident Stress Management and was a founding member of the San Joaquin Area Critical Incident Support Team.

Robert Engel

Robert Engel

Robert retired from CAL FIRE after 30 years of service and has been active in the Clements Fire Protection District since 1985. Involved with Critical Incident Stress support since the 1990s, he has served with the SJACIST since 2009 in both leadership and peer support roles.

Richard Cantu

Richard Cantu

Richard Cantu, a retired law enforcement officer with over 30 years of service, has been part of the San Joaquin Area Critical Incident Support Team since 2005, where he continues to serve as a Chaplain and leader.

Rev. Mark Butler

Rev. Mark Butler

Mark has led Harvest Bible Church in Stockton for over thirty years with a passion for serving the community. As a longtime fire chaplain and volunteer with the San Joaquin Area Critical Incident Support Team, he brings calm and care to first responders and those in crisis.
